In the Stargate Universe, there are always bad guys. Some, however, are much worse than others.
So far, I’ve given you an overview of the Goa’uld and the Replicators.
By human standards, the actions of the Goa’uld are reprehensible.
Other Goa’uld considered this guy’s actions atrocious.
I give you, Anubis.
Creepy, isn’t he?
Anubis started out working for the system lord Apep. Long story short, Apep really liked Anubis and promoted him. Anubis used an Ancient Healing Device on Apep (to heal his boss, but found out it had other properties as well) and learned about six jewels, the Eyes of the Goa’uld, which power a planet buster.
After a while, Anubis rises high enough that he murders Apep by pulling out his snake and eating it in front of everybody. He then declares himself to be Emperor of the Goa’uld.
Ambitious, wasn’t he?
Well, as happens with all delusional, devious, crackpot, geniuses, Anubis overestimated how powerful he was. The other Goa’uld didn’t appreciate him eating Apep like that (or some of the other really nasty things he did) so, Ra pulled everybody together, beat the snot out of Anubis and tried to murder him.
Unfortunately for them (and everybody else), Anubis got his hands on some research about ascension from the Ancients (we’ll talk about them next week). He tricked an Ancient into helping him ascend. However, once she figured out who he really was and what he was doing, she trapped him in a sort of hellish life limbo between this plane and the ascended one.
The Goa’uld think Anubis is dead, so they all continue with their lives with Ra as their leader.
Ra gets iced, the Goa’uld rise up against Earth and get put down and all this time, Anubis is biding his time and building up his forces and power behind the scenes.
When Apophis and Cronus are destroyed, Anubis makes his presence known to the other Goa’uld and asks if he could be let back in. Some of the lower System Lords start following him. Of course, the Higher System Lords don’t trust him.
Yes, Anubis has issues. Some of the things he does when he resurfaces, are, creating a clone named Khalek (to try and ascend him) trying to destroy SGC and Earth (a few times), wiping out nearly all the Tok’Ra, destroying the planet Abydoss and all of its inhabitants and capturing and torturing an Asgard named Thor and obtaining significant amounts of Asgard information.
He was again gaining more power than the High System Lords were comfortable with him having. SGC and the System Lords come to a very shaky truce and work together (not really) to destroy Anubis. This has several dramatic ups and downs (trust me, you want to watch the series) resulting in enormous loss of life for Goa’ulds, humans, Tok’ra, Asgards, Jaffa and the all the citizens of Abydoss.
It isn’t until Oma, the Ancient that Anubis tricked allows his full Ascension so that they can fight each other. Of course, since they couldn’t destroy one another, this means the two of them would be locked in battle for all eternity. As Anubis was busy fighting Oma on the Ascended plane, he was no longer a threat to our universe.
“Well, you can’t win.”
“It won’t matter, you won’t be able to do anything but fight me back.“—Anubis and Oma Desala
Now, you would think after fighting Replicators, Goa’uld, and Anubis that our universe would be safe.
You’d be wrong in that thought.
Come back next week, and I’ll tell you why.
Until then, enjoy one of my favorite quotes by Anubis.
“I am Anubis. Humans of the Ta’uri, your end of days finally approaches. There will be no mercy. You will bow to my awesome power. There is nothing that can stop the destruction I bring upon you. Prepare to meet your doom.“—Anubis’s threat to the Humans at Stargate Command.
