Today is a day in which we should all take a moment to be grateful.
On this day in 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence which solidified that America was its own country. Free of the laws, restraints and (then) tyranny of King George III of Great Britain, we became a nation which, in theory, believed that all men are created equal.
The Declaration, authored by Thomas Jefferson, (the first version of which was actually written by Benjamin Franklin) details the many injustices that the king was guilty of. These injustices were the reason the Colonies fought and died for separation from the oppressive British Monarchy.
The sad thing is, that most Americans today have never read this iconic document of our nations history. If you are one of them, or if you’d just like to re-read it, I have attached it for you here.
Take a few minutes and really think about what it is that we celebrate today.
